I have to tell you my story, it's a sad one, I don't like to sound all depressing or make you, the reader feel bad about me, or think that I'm telling a sob story, but the fact is that I don't want you to make the same, horrible, ill conceived decision I made.  At one time in my life, I thought that I could go through life with no help from large corporations, thinking that my rental homes didn't need any kind of help from larger corporations, thinking they were just too expensive for me.  But in hindsight it was one of the largest mistakes of my life.  You can never really perceive some of the horrible things that may happen in your life or your area, and that was my mistake.  Well it's a mistake I will never make again, it was something I was stubborn about, and now I've learned from it, and anyone that has rental property would be smart to take this advice, if you value your livelihood and your property, the best thing you can do is just surf the net, check out the sites, and truth be told, renters insurance isn't as bad or as expensive as you think it might be.

You see, I lived in new Orleans a few years back, to be exact, I moved there about 15 years ago and invested a lot in attaining 4 rental properties, well I rented these properties to people I could trust, older married couples, retired people, and people that ran home based businesses.  I had no real reason to be worried about any problem with them, they were all well respected, with great living references, I was smart.  I picked a great set of people to live in my rentals, so I didn't think I needed to worry about renters insurance.  Well I couldn't have been more wrong.  I never anticipated the hurricane hitting New Orleans, I mean who would have, it was such a fluke thing, it was something that never had happened before, and it took a lot of people unawares.  Well because of this unforeseen catastrophe my rental properties and my own home were utterly destroyed.  Leaving me dumbfounded with a huge bill, I still had to pay the mortgage on 5 homes (counting my own) with now form of income and completely destroyed properties.  I ended up selling to a set of investors and taking a huge cut from what I owed I'm still in debt because of my lack of foresight.

Well I tucked my tail between my legs and moved back to California with a huge amount of debt.  I have another friend in the area that actually owned homes that were affected by the disaster in New Orleans, but came out with more money, because he got reparations and was able to sell.  He referred me to renters insurance quotes, this database of incredible insurance outfits that compete for work, and because of that you can find outstanding deals on your renters insurance.  It was a great asset that I wish I would have utilized before the disaster, but I didn't.  In the future, when I get back into the market again that will be the first place I look.  It's an investment that at times you may think you don't need, or don't care to put the money into, but you have to consider the possibility that a hurricane or natural disaster can hit anywhere and at anytime.
